SUDI SCOFFS Disregard all the Paris cliches: espec SUDI SCOFFS Disregard all the Paris cliches: especially the disdain for vegetarians & the haut froideur towards the English.  Dining @restaurant_leservan this eve was a revelation - thanks @tomjenkinseats for endorsing somewhere I’ve long wanted to visit . The owners, two sisters, take inspiration from time spent in the kitchens of L’Astrance & L’Arpage and it is pleasingly evident in the complex waves of flavour and unexpected juxtapositions.  Dad @bvpainter had veal tongue for the first time since his Mum had cooked it just after the war when it was one of the few meats not rationed. This was ethereally light served on brioche with kimchi running through the veal jus.  Ravioli came tightly packed with an Asian accented minced pork & prawn filling & sticky punchy soy butter accented with chilli & peanut.  My Dad doesn’t even like celery, but attracted by a savoury Tarte Tatin he opted for the confit of celery Tarte tatin with a Comte cream with petals of champignons de Paris and it sensational - earthy, fragrant, dancing with flavour, it showed how the French can adore vegetables creatively.  The French also do good chicken: this Landes chicken seemingly poached in a wine imbued jus yet with burnished crisp skin, blissful new potatoes that tasted freshly dug & almost flowery with feves, burrata scored with tangy chutney.  Exemplary chocolate soufflé looks low key yet together with the bitter chocolate sorbet makes a sophisticated ending to a memorable meal. Wines by the glass are fairly priced and delicious. Tables are placed close in a room where only the ceiling is painted hinting at faded grandeur and conversation flows easily between tables amidst murmurs of appreciation for such exceptional cooking.  Perhaps it is the appeal of my ever smiling nonagenarian Dad & I together obviously living the Bon Viveur life , yet even in the Marmottan gallery earlier and at lunch those frosty Parisians actually made conversation with us !! For so many of us Mother’s Day is poignant. Reme For so many of us Mother’s Day is poignant. Remembering my ever listening, kind, generous & loving Mum, who had the most infectious laugh, is especially poignant this year. It makes my tears flow, as I so wish Mum, @theopigott so greatly missed adoring grandma, who would even iron his socks & pants, when he stayed at theirs & made all his favourite foods, could be at his wedding this summer to @kafayat_olaleye.  Sadly they never met, though I am sure they would have loved each other. I was so fortunate to have my grandma at my wedding, just wish it could have been the same for Theo.  I would also have loved Mum to meet @stephen_cottage #thesconeman and know they would have loved each other and chatted for hours about baking and so much more. I know Mum would have liked to see me so happy & content after so many years of her not knowing quite how she could make up for me often feeling so alone.  Love 💕 you forever Mum. What a memorable & massively enjoyable evening learning about the history of the ultimate pepper grinder with lifetime guarantee @peugeot_saveurs_uk & trying their new #maestro with @sabrinaghayour explaining her love of different peppers & how much more nuanced the right pepper makes a dish. Wow 😯 what recipes, @sabrinaghayour what a feast & so lovely to catch up on your happy Yorkshire family life. Collectively we went crazy for the deep fried (cornflour coated) aubergine with Thai basil & sticky back kampot pepper sauce. I 💕 loved the enormous prawns from @rex.goldsmith with white sikara (an absolute revelation in pepper power) lemongrass, fresh turmeric & coconut curry sauce tho red kampot pepper sweet & spicy slow cooked pork with charred pineapple was so perkily vibrant too. Lovely to be back @divertimenti @divertimenti.ben celebrating turning 60 this year with @cookwithjopratt too. Lively & fun food & travel conversation around the table fuelled with superb @champagnepommeryuk with @eddie.r.scott @masterchefuk @gregorrankin @food&travelmag @breakfastatcarolines @thecaterermag @charvossen @youmagazine @samuelwgoldsmith @bbcgoodfood. SUDI SCOFFS As lunch promised so much yet delivere SUDI SCOFFS As lunch promised so much yet delivered so little in terms of memorable flavours, colours or anticipated joy of Scottish ingredients imbued with Spanish pizazz , here’s a picture of me in the irresistible, vibrant, flavour of summer  @_aje_ top I was bowled over by @libertylondon.  Berwick st newcomer @maresco_soho simply didn’t live up to @gracedent review rave. Most disappointing of all was a thin & flat in every sense little tin tray of fideua lacking the glorious depth of seafood broth I’d hoped for & just the one slender, virtually fleshless langoustine (there are two in the photo accompanying Grace’s review I note) & a few tiddlers within. It made me very nostalgic for the magnificent fideua @nikskitchenldn made in their early Bermondsey days, bring it back to @vinegaryardldn I beseech thee.  We ate mussels apparently cooked on the plancha yet certainly not thrillingly brine imbued nor smoky, nor plump served  in a thin tame green mojo verde. Charred leeks with a mediocre-bland romesco sauce with none of the nutty texture I adore followed.  I wondered why they weren’t offering calcotada considering it is high season? Charred cauliflower with another mojo murmur was utterly unmemorable. We’d heard the Basque cheesecake was magnificent yet there was no evidence of a @bratrestaurant like wonder.  Did we simply choose badly in an effort to eat relatively healthily?  Well, the jury is out. And @barrafinalondon certainly need not fear. SUDI SCOFFS: I must have been subconsciously prayi SUDI SCOFFS: I must have been subconsciously praying for my glorious meal @saltiegirl.london the glam new restaurant import from former Hollywood producer @metkate & @varuntalreja84 to continue for ever, especially in the truly lovely company of @jobarnessauce. I was definitely offering up thanks for quite the best anchovies on toast (a favourite anytime lunch at home with @conservasortiz) taken to stratospheric heights with @olasagasti_es fillets, ridiculously plump & large in the best sense, & umami bold too. Better still they are langorously draped over straccciatella cheese on superlative sourdough. Yum. Like @gilescoren I'd  happily work my way through the entire tinned fish menu which totally fascinates me (see pictures 2 & 3). It includes all manner of recherché seafood tins and every part of the most precious tuna. Possibly the world's first tinnelier encouraged us to live decadently and try the tuna neck, top-of-the-range delicacy. Juicy, rich, mellow with delectable olive oil and served with three lines of different salt including a seaweed one, a pimento dip and more of the outstanding sourdough, it was as much of a treat as the more obviously decadent special of sauteed gnocchi with English caviar. I was less taken by the torched mackerel which didn't need the glistening olive oil bath which masked its flavour and, for me, the crab roll, half sushi like was just too spicy. I also loved the deep blue of the room, its arches, its saltie girl wooden boat head mermaid and the bars, perfect for a posh solo dining treat. Caveat, this is luxurious, cossetting dining with a high price tag. SUDI SCOFFS From Balham to Lagos, almost, in 50 mi SUDI SCOFFS From Balham to Lagos, almost, in 50 minutes & what a vibrant, deeply warming & tasty welcome.  I loved the tangerine orange, 50s vibe of @chukusldn permanent home & felt the cooking was far more assured & wholly delicious than at their now long ago pop-up.  For those new to West African cooking, this is a great place to get immersed & enjoy a distinctive blend of aromatic warmth with clove, nutmeg & cayenne flavour fellows besides an earthiness with a hint of bitter (especially in the colourful egusi dish)& enough peppery heat to ripple plus some hits of more fiery yet always well tempered Scotch Bonnet - so good to dip into flawless fluffy cassava chips (baked perhaps as no hint of oiliness?). Best dish of all: luscious suya prawns redolent with ginger, grains of paradise, paprika & cayenne & crushed peanuts, so good I wanted to lick the plate! Only jollof quinoa disappointed as it didn’t have the intensity from  slow cooking the onion, garlic, ginger, tomato, pepper & Scotch bonnet I’d expected.  For a different kind of pancake: try their delicious different sweet-sour rice pancake with pumpkin, peanut & honey stew.  To drink zobo: hibiscus iced tea, with ginger, clove & pineapple juice.  A first proper immersion in a West African restaurant for @stephen_cottage aka #thesconeman who loved it too. Utterly thrilled with the family tree of Ungars & Utterly thrilled with the family tree of Ungars & Zolas created by Dad’s gorgeous cousin @angiehillview & most fittingly given to us last night when we met for pierogi & jazz @posklondon as this side of our family are originally from #Rseszow, Poland. I clearly remember my great-grandmother Taube Friedentag born 1884 & her legendary kneidlech. She & my great grandfather Adolf Ungar came to live at 21 Monmouth St where he became a show business barber, no wonder my Grandma loved the theatre so much.  Both she & Angie’s Dad Cecil had the most wonderful ringlets which must explain where my curls come from.  Happy to see @kafayat_olaleye had already been added to the tree in readiness for their wedding this August! What a treat to dine at the newly, sensuously spru What a treat to dine at the newly, sensuously spruced @quovadissoho with @stephen_cottage aka #TheSconeMan who drove specially to London from Suffolk last night & back again 5.30AM today - that's dedication - to enjoy the splendours of @jeremyleeqv table. All the absolute classic dishes vying for attention, all absolutely correct, not flashy, nor look-at-me on trend yet always interesting combinations of flavour and texture joyously combined & scrupulously correctly made. I loved the cuttlefish with monk's beard and S's exquisitely warming Cullen Skink, my pearlescent hake with mussels & S's suet crust pie utterly magnificent. He was in raptures & planning to bring his parents for a rare trip to London to dine here before a classical concert on South Bank next month. Yet it was the lemon tart that quietly stole the show for me. I hadn't enjoyed such a perfect zingy, just set one with impeccable fine pastry since @marcopierrewhit long ago days at #Harveys (though his recipe in #WhiteHeat always works brlliantly too). This lemon tart was simply superlative. The understated pleasure of a kitchen that just loves its ingredients, doesn't need to show off and most importantly has in Jeremy a chef who spends so much quality time in the kitchen inspiring his team rather than building empires. The redesign itself with almost a restaurant within a restaurant has a touch of Parisian loucheness that is wholly appealing as is the always warm & smartly opinionated service. So good to see beautiful, svelte @xantheclay, @felicityspector @allanjenkins21 . Truly an evening to remember celebrating one of th Truly an evening to remember celebrating one of the great 💕 loves of my life: chocolate 🍫 particularly @original_beans the first & only truly regenerative & net zero chocolate co dedicated to conservation & renewal of rainforests both trees & communities. So wonderful to hear @kauffmannphilipp (some of you may remember I helped launch OB in UK & sell to retailers & chefs) The most superb evening orchestrated by @ravneeteats @countertalk @prgirl65 @toklas_london with a memorable meal cooked by @jokebakare whose food is been longing to try: ekoki (steamed corn with tamarind) & deeply delectable mutton with spiced chocolate rub & attasi rice plus possibly the best chocolate dessert ever by @terri_mercieca @happyendingsldn using 3 chocolates with exquisite clarity letting their glorious fruit flavours sing. Meal beautiful with @journeysendwines & great conversation too with @chloedavida @emmottelainea & as ever @leratofoods .  How brilliant to see not only @ottolenghi but @honeyandco too.
